Commitments

As a Clear Lake Choir student, you will be enrolled in an ability-level ensemble based on your hearing at the end of the year. All choirs meet during the school day. Choir is a performing art; all students will receive a major grade for the four yearly after-school concerts we produce. Should you be placed in the Symphonic Chorale, you will be required to audition for the All-State Choir. There will be opportunities for students to participate in all-region, all-state, solo & ensemble, and private lessons. These opportunities are not required but highly encouraged. Choir shows up on your OFFICIAL transcript and looks great when getting ready for college. There are many opportunities around Houston to earn scholarship money for college for those who truly commit to developing their skill as a vocalist. Last year, Clear Lake Choir seniors won over $100,000 in college scholarships for choir, even if they majored in some other field! College admissions officers care about what extra-curricular activities you were involved in, and love to see four years of involvement in those same activities. Even more than class rank and GPA, college admissions officers look at your extra-curricular involvement and like to see commitment and consistency.

“It is extremely important to be involved with something you are passionate about in high school. Each year, we get applicants from over 10,000 high schools. Even if we wanted to accept every valedictorian, we do not have the psace for them. We are looking beyond academics.”- Kim Lopez, University of Pennsylvania Admissions.

We highly encourage our students to participate in other Clear Lake High School organizations. You must be organized and willing to communicate all conflicts with sponsors and the choir directors. Our choir students are also involved in the following activities: Orchestra, Band, Drama, Art, Track, Cross Country, Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Tennis, Swimming, Softball, Athletic Training, Debate, HOSA, Cheerleading, Wrestling, NHS and all national honor societies, DECA, Student Council, LOVERS, Audio & Visual, Hospitality, and a wide variety of clubs!

How much does choir cost?

Not much! Choir dues are only $40 per year. This yearly payment covers your music, uniform (tux or dress) dry cleaning, accompanist fees, and classroom supplies. All students must purchase our informal uniform for a one time fee of $28. Students wearing the tux will also need to buy a tux shirt, bowtie and cummerbund.

If finances are an issue, please talk to the directors. We have funds available to assist with required materials.
