On April 6 & 7, the Clear Lake Choirs participated in the UIL Concert & Sightreading Contest. Choirs around the state of participate in this contest by preparing approved repertoire (approved by the state’s top music educators), and by singing a piece of music, at sight, for ratings. The ratings given to each competing school’s choir, in concert and sightreading, will define how that program is viewed in the Houston choral circuit for the following year. This contest is important. This contest is analogous to an athletic team’s championship game. But unlike UIL athletics, where high-quality teams have an entire season of games to define their success, we in the UIL music sector, have this one contest to define our success.
Under the direction of Mr. Dominguez and Mrs. Blakey, the choirs performed the following repertoire for the concert portion of the contest:
Symphonic Chorale (Varsity)
Gloria from Mass in G – Franz Schubert
Luci Care, Luci Belle – W.A. Mozart
Rosas Pandan – arr. George Hernandez
Symphonic Women’s Chorale (Varsity)
Psalm 150 – David Wilcocks
I Am Not Yours – David Childs
All That Hath Life And Breath Praise Ye The Lord – Rene Clausen
A Cappella Women’s Choir (Non-Varsity)
Innoria – arr. Partiquin
How Can I Keep From Singing – arr. Judith Herrington
Dance On My Heart – Allen Koepke
Concert Women’s Choir (Sub Non-Varsity)
Fire – Mary Goetz
My True Love Hath My Heart – Lois Wimbrey-Williams
Hodie – Nancy Hill Cobb
The Clear Lake Choirs are happy to report that the Concert Women’s Choir earned Superior and Excellent ratings on stage and Sweepstakes (highest possible score) in Sightreading! This is a HUGE achievement for Concert as they have not earned a Sweepstakes in SEVEN years! A Cappella, Symphonic Women’s Chorale, and Symphonic Chorale earned clean Sweepstakes’ in both Concert and Sightreading.
